Welcome to another edition of Diary of a Dev! In this edition, I’ll be diving into one of the most crucial components of any computer system—the motherboard.
What is a Motherboard?
The motherboard serves as the backbone of a computer, connecting various parts such as the CPU, RAM, storage devices, and peripherals, allowing them to communicate effectively. Without it, your PC wouldn’t function.
Different Sizes of Motherboards (Form Factors)
Motherboards come in various sizes, known as form factors. The most common ones are:
ATX – Standard size, offering good expansion options.
Micro ATX – Smaller, with fewer expansion slots but still versatile.
Mini ITX – Very compact, used in small form factor builds.
Each form factor is suited for different needs and case sizes.
Key Components of a Motherboard
Some essential components you’ll find on a motherboard include:
CPU Socket – This is where the Central Processing Unit (CPU) is mounted. The type of socket determines which processors are compatible. Some common socket types include AMD’s AM4 and Intel’s LGA 1700.
RAM Slots (Memory Slots) – These slots hold the Random Access Memory (RAM) modules. Common types include DDR3, DDR4, and DDR5. The number of slots and their speed determine how much and what kind of memory the system can use.
Chipset – The chipset manages communication between the CPU, RAM, and peripherals. It consists of the Northbridge and Southbridge in older designs, or a single Platform Controller Hub (PCH) in modern motherboards. It also defines many of the motherboard’s capabilities, such as supported memory types and expansion slots.
Expansion Slots –
PCIe (PCI Express) Slots – Used for graphics cards, network cards, sound cards, and other expansion devices. PCIe provides high-speed connectivity.
Storage Connectors –
SATA Ports – Used to connect traditional hard drives or SSDs.
M.2 Connectors – Provide ultra-fast storage speeds.
Fan Headers – Connectors for system fans, CPU coolers, and sometimes water-cooling pumps, helping to manage system temperatures efficiently.
